The Giver

By Lois Lowry

Reason & Genre
The reason I chose this book was because it was recommended to my by a friend as a book that caught his attention. I however enjoyed this book becase it managed to hold my attention the whole time I was reading it. I think that the book could fall into the science-fiction, government controlled, post-apocalyptic and possibly young adult. The book falls into the science fiction category because of the way that there would not one day be one being that would be all knowing who would pass memories on through touch. The book falls under the government controlled part because the government controls everyone in the way from what jobs they get to how they are not allowed to have mirrors of the fact that they are color blind to every color. Lastly, the government controls the people by using pills called Stirrings, these pills suppress all emotions. I also find it to be somewhat post-apoclyptic because of the way that the author describes the society of everyone riding bicycles everywhere with gravel roads and guards walking around everywhere and a speaker in every building so that the government can make important announcements because all other electronic devices had not been re-developed but there has been some advances in technology because there was controlled climate in the village and there was also some livestock.

Summary of the plot
The book The Giver is told from the eyes of a boy names Jonas who is about to become a mighty 12. A 12 is the age where children are given there jobs for the rest of there lives so that they can move on from there family unit where they live with there so called parents which they are in no way genetically related to. Jonases mother is an enforcer, his father is a nurturer(doctor), and his sister is who is becoming an 8 at the ceremony this year. At the ceremony the children that would be moving up in age are called up to the stage in the order that they were born (Jonas is #19) except Jonases number was skipped by the chief elder for some off reason, lastly Jonas was called up and the elder announced that Jonas was very special and he was being selected to be "The Receiver of memories". He's selected for this job because he is considered to be able to see beyond, for example he has different eyes then everyone in the village and he also can sometimes here music and see color. His training begins the next day where he goes into this room with all these books and a couch and he meets a man that is called The Giver. The Giver is a man who telepathically transfers memories of things eliminated from the society today like violence, sadness, and loss, as well as true love, beauty, joy, adventure, animals, and family. Once Jonas experiences some of the Givers memories he thought that he should release these memories back into the community but he couldn't. During the course of this a baby from the nurturing center was staying with Jonas and his family and Jonas discovered that he could pass memories to Gabriel (the baby). In the community if something were to happen to the Giver or the Receiver (Jonas) then everyone would get all the memories and the people in the community were so unintelligent that they would not know what to do will all the memories they were give. Jonas decided to escape the community with Gabe to give everyone the memories so that they could see the truth about the government and what they had done so one night he got Gabe and some food and rode off on his bicycle.

Three main characters
The Giver- He is by far the most important person in the community. The Giver is a man who is all knowing he has every memory from everywhere at every time. The Giver is like the historian in the community because he has all memories from past times where there were colors, real families, equal rights, and the government wouldn't kill you if you called is a name. The giver had tried to give memories to other people before but it was unsuccessful until Jonas came along and was able to receive the memories fine until he got to learn about all the things that the government was keeping form him and everyone else in the community and had he and everyone else had been genetically modified to prevent uprises and revolts against the government. The Giver rarely left his office because not also of people know about him.
Jonas- Is the main character in the story who lives in a family unit with his siblings who he's not related to. Hes a normal person except for the fact that he can see colors which is very rare in his community but he overlooks it. During the ceremony of aging up he is not called in his selected position but he is called last of all the numbers to receive his job for the community which no one know what it is. He's selected to be the receiver of memories which at first hes scared because he doesnt know what that is but then later figures out that he enjoys the position. He gets to sit in a room with the Giver who is basically all knowing of everything that happened the in past and receive all his memory from him during each session. This keeps up for about a year until Jones just doesn't get why everyone cant have these memories until he learns about emotions and how wonderful older societies used to be. In the current society there was little emotion and the little emotion they had was suppressed by pills that would suppress them. Jonas still thinks people need 2 know about these memorys so he runs away from the village with Gabriel a baby form the nurturing center who was going to be "Released" from the community or killed so Jonas just took him along with him. When Jonas left the village all the memories that the Giver had given him were given to all the other people in the community. After he left they started running short on food and Jonas died of Hypothermia.
Gabriel- Is a newborn child that Gabs father figure brings home from the nursery every night because during the night he keeps crying and waking all the other babes up in the nursery so he stays at home with Jonas and his family every night. Jonas is always able to clam him down because he is able to share the memories with him. Gabe basically becomes Jonases new founds best friend who couldn't talk but could still receive the memories. Towards the end of the story Gabe is supposed to be killed or released from the community so Jonas gets on his bike and takes off with Gabe to leave the community.

Theme
The theme of this story is a post-appocliptic or 3rd world county view of life in the future of possibly now. The Government contours the society from the aspect of a post-appoclipitic world by making equal family units, restricting colors, requiring people to wear certain clothes bases on there ages, making people go to schools, and having assigned jobs at age 12. Its in the form of a 3rd world county because of the way that they get water from a well they also still require people to put certain hours into the community and the way that the city is supposedly four fourmated by having dirt roads with houses on them and have a town center in the middle to regulate trade. The story is also about an all knowing being who holds memories from the past that however is the smartest but has no governmental power.

A problem
Jonas’s new emotional enlightens and surroundingscause him to rebel against the restrictions his society places on freedom of choice, individuality, emotion, and human experience. When Jonas becomes the new Receiver, he receives memories that change the way he thinks about himself, his community, and his family and friends forever. When Jonas realizes that when his father “releases” new born children he actually kills them, Jonas reaches a point of total anger. His frustration with his community and his desire to change it have been growing steadily, and finally Jonas cannot accept the society’s insensitivity to the value of human life. He determines to change things. In order to put his plan into action, Jonas runs away from the community on bicycle on night with Gabe, the baby from the nurturing center who was about to be released the next day, hiding from search planes using the cold memory and trying to cope with starvation using the memories of food, Jonas dies a death of hypothermia while he's hallucinating that he's riding down a sled on a hill to a warm families home on a christmas night.

This picture was taken while i was driving down the high way one time and i stopped for gas and just saw this wonderful photo opportunity for this book. This photo resembles the road that Jonas Grabbed Gabe hopped on his bike and rode off on so that the society could have all its memories back.

What does this book remind me of?
This book reminds me of the hunger games series except there isn't someone who fights in a large competition in the end. From the way that the societies are described to the way that the government controls who is born and who can have children to the jobs that people have and cant have. This book also reminds me of the way that they world will supposedly be run if there is an nuclear disaster or a epidemic that destroys the United states and makes puts them back into the ununited states like it was centuries ago.

Five significant quotes from the book

The themeThe theme of the book is greed. Greed is the main cause for Coyotitos death, not the bullet that killed him. Greed also caused Kinos house, boat and whole entire life to be flipped upside down all over a pearl that was in the end thrown back into the ocean where it was found.
